Industry practices suggest that all unsolicited children’s book materials be submitted to a publisher via a literary agent. This policy serves as protection for all parties and eliminates the possibility of copyright infringement.

Typically, the services of an illustrator are not contracted until after the manuscript has been acquired by a publisher. Once the manuscript has been accepted, the author may have the opportunity to suggest his or her choice of illustrator.
